Barge Hole opener August 1, 2020.

The famed Barge Hole August 1st opener has come and gone with a decent number of king salmon coming out of the upper Sacramento River opening section. The Sacramento River from the Red Bluff Diversion Dam upriver to the Deschutes Bridge in Anderson California finally opened on the morning of August 1st. There were salmon hauled in out holes like the Barge Hole, Two Rocks, Big Rock and The Old Mouth on opening day. The Department of Fish and Wildlifes salmon counting team check over 60 boats and estimated that almost 100 salmon were caught on this opening day stretch of Sacramnto River. The Sacramento River will remain open through December 31, 2020 this season.

Dave Jacobs Professional Guide Service with the help of guides Ryan Tripp and Steve Lowery helped all three families catch king salmon on opening day, The Laver’s from Sacramento California, The Carapetian’s from Long Beach California and finally the LaPlant’s from Palos Verdes California. All three families showed up early on August 1st and were not disappointed taking home fresh Sacramento River king salmon.

Also on August 1st this year, the closed upper 5.5 miles of trout fishing waters on the Sacramento River in Redding California re opened with a bang. The Sacramento River from Keswick Dam downriver to the Highway 299 bridge in Redding is now open to trout fishing. Anglers drifting small egg imitations did not take long to catch and release well over 30 wild bows’ over 16 inches in each boat on opening day. Some rainbows measured in the low 20 inch range near Redding’s Sundial Bridge below the Posse Grounds boat launch facility. Trout fishing here should remain strong for the rest of the week as it has been closed to all fishing since April 1, 2020.
