TOP 4 SACRAMENTO RIVER KING SALMON FISHING DESTINATIONS

#1 Awesome Fishing Destinations:  Landing, Cottonwood, Calfornia:

If any location of old could talk or tell a salmon story this long forgotten landing would tell story after story. Before and soon after the completion of Shasta Dam this was one of the biggest salmon fishing resorts and destinations on the west coast. Hundreds of small boats would venture a 1/4 mile upriver of Roosters Landing and you could literally see 75 to 100 small boats anchored up ready to intercept the second largest run of king salmon on the west coast, The Sacramento River.

Today you would never know of these old stories as many of these avid Sacramento River salmon fishing anglers have passed along with their tall tales of Roosters Landing. Since the 1970’s and 80’s and to this day, this Landing was one of the launches to the famed “Barge Hole” which could have an entire chapter on its history. This 50 plus foot deep hole is the final holding destination to Sacramento River king salmon before they enter Battle Creek, the entrance to Coleman National Fish Hatchery. This hatchery produces over 13 million salmon smolt a year! Yes, 13 million smolt a year!! Hard to believe a single hatchery on the Sacramento River today in 2022 can produce 13 million smolt only to see a return of less 100,000 adult salmon recorded in 2021!

With this holes location and depth to Battle Creek makes it a favorite spot to try for Sacramento River king salmon. You can plan on crowds here but you can be assured of lots of Sacramento River salmon here. It’s also a prime location to witness and watch Sacramento River Salmon Guides work the Barge Hole and the mouth of Battle Creek.

#2 Awesome Fishing Destinations:  Jelly's Ferry Bridge, Cottonwood, Calfornia:

To best describe this unimproved boat launch on BLM land would be the “gate to the canyon” on the lower Sacramento River. I will give you FIRST TIME BOATERS a word of advice, this section of river below the Jelly’s Ferry Bridge is an expert jet boaters section of river. You can get into some real boating, rafting or canoeing trouble down here. The lava beds and lava rock river channel down here are a real danger and a guaranteed “can opener” of your $80,000 aluminum jet boat. Oh I get it…hear it everyday…”oh my $80,000 jet boat can run in 4 inches of water!” Please stop!!! True….I’m sure it can with a expert operator but “fool around here and find out” couldn’t be more true.

This canyon section of the Sacramento River not only provides spectacular scenery, but offers incredible Sacramento River salmon fishing at certain times of the season. This is another section of Sacramento River salmon fishing waters I could write an entire chapter on. This place is home to some big ones…. “two rock” “big swirl” “salmon hole” “stand pipe” “big rock” “Inks Creek” “Whitehorse” “the Shute” and “China Rapids”. All of these are prime Sacramento River salmon fishing locations accessible by the Jelly’s Ferry boat launch.

#3 Awesome Fishing Destinations:   Sycamore Grove, Red Bluff, California:

Here is a important and popular Sacramento River salmon fishing location and destination and number 3 on Dave Jacobs Sacramento River top salmon fishing list. This launch is located directly below the Red Bluff Diversion Dam and home to a long list of popular Sacramento River salmon fishing holes. Here you can salmon fish “Pig pen” “Salt Creek” “sheep hole” “Bow River” “sheer pin riffle” “Cowboy Hole” “Bamboo” “Hunters” and “Coyote Creek” just to name a few. These are all great salmon fishing holes on the Sacramento River and here too you can witness the best Sacramento River salmon fishing guides working the waters.

TThe Sycamore Grove boat launch is a good launch to access the Sacramento River above the Red Bluff Diversion dam which used to be called “Lake Red Bluff” but now that the diversion dam is not in use the Sacramento River has returned to its natural river bed and is the lower gateway to the bottom of “China Rapids” and the mouth of Payne’s Creek.

#4 Awesome Fishing Destinations:   Woodson Bridge, Corning, California:

With the installation of the multi million dollar “cold water curtain” device at Shasta Dam, cold water can be pulled from different depths accessing cold water from the depths of Shasta Dam. This cold water delivery started in the mid 1990’s and changed the run timings of adult king salmon on the Sacramento River. No section of Sacramento River benefitted more than Woodson Bridge and that is why it is number 4 on Dave Jacobs Sacramento River top salmon fishing list.

Here is where ideal holding water temperatures land from the cold water deliveries at Shasta Dam. Every August and September thousands of Sacramento River salmon fishing anglers ascend on this popular stretch of Sacramento River salmon fishing waters. Some of the biggest names of Sacramento River salmon fishing guides make this their home two to three months a year. Famous salmon fishing locations like “car body” “Deer Creek” “Hank’s Hole” (appropriately named after Professional guide services founder and legendary guide Hank Mautz) “rock pile” “3 mile” “the lake” “6 mile” “the split” “Anderson hole” and the famed “Kelly hole”.

“Fishing around any of these popular Woodson Bridge Sacramento River salmon fishing locations will give you a solid idea on how to approach and fish king salmon on the Sacramento River” says Sacramento River salmon fishing guide Dave Jacobs (530) 646-9110

FAQs

1. Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No. Dave uses only the best equipment, G. Loomis rods, light tackle, all matching equipment and very top quality. On a few occasions anglers have brought their own rod, but seldom use them! All equipment is maintained and set up for peak performance!

2. What type of boat do you have?

I have a 22 ft. Alumaweld Outboard Jet Boat(www.alumaweldboats.com) – this is THE boat preferred by the top guides. It is also the roomiest and most comfortable boat to fish out of.

3. How many anglers can you take on the boat?

can easily accommodate 4 anglers on the boat (sometimes more at your request). For larger parties we will secure other boats with the best top quality guides. It is you and your party on the boat – we DO NOT mix parties together.

4. Can you accommodate a large party or corporate account?

I can take 4 anglers on my boat and in some instances I can take up to 6. For larger parties, we would secure other top quality professional guides. If I can’t find a guide who will do a good job for you I will let you know. Only the best – we want you to have an excellent fishing trip.

5. What license/stamps do I need to fish the Sacramento River?

You need your regular California Fishing License. When fishing for steelhead you need a steelhead punch card. When fishing for North Coast Salmon (Trinity, Klamath, and Smith Rivers) you need a North Coast Salmon punch card. White Sturgeon fishing you need a Sturgeon punch card.

6. What else should I bring on the trip?

Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch/drinks and of course the appropriate fishing license. Anglers keeping fish need an ice chest to take their fish home. For salmon you need a big ice chest!

7. What type of clothing should I wear?

In the summer months it gets hot, but the first light of the day on the river is cool even on those hot days. Always have a pair of sweats to put over your shorts and a sweatshirt. In the fall and winter you need warm clothing. Jackets, hats, and rain gear. Watch the weather and you can always call our toll-free number for current weather conditions.

8. Should I bring rain gear?

During the summer months it seldom rains. It’s always a good idea to bring rain gear – just in case. You can always leave it in your car, or I have lots of room in the boat.

9. Do you fish in the rain?

Yes, we fish in the rain but only if we know there’s good fishing out there (in fact, some of the best days have been on a rainy day). We never take you out, if it looks like a total blow out and not a good chance at catching fish. Bring rain gear!

10. What type of a deposit do you require?

A half deposit is required on all fishing trips, and the balance due the day of the trip. A 14-day cancellation notice is required for refund of any deposits.

11. Do you have gift certificates for sale?

Yes, we have professional gift certificates accompanied with a business card and brochure.

12. Do you have references?

Yes. When fishing full time, year round, you get to fish and make friends from all around the west coast and the beyond!

13. Are there motels in the area?

Yes. We can give you suggestions of motels in the area you will be fishing. Many of the motels offer a “fishing rate”. Call direct to the motel when making a reservation and ask if they offer a “fishing rate”.

14. Where are you located?

We live in Redding California(Located in the heart of Northern California’s “GOLDEN CIRCLE”) approximately 160 miles north of Sacramento. We travel all over the North State and Southern Oregon – depending on where the fish are biting!
